The Peter and Paul fortress founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini’s designs from 1706 to 1740 on the smallest island of the Neva river delta. The fortress that had a purpose of defending the city from the Swedes with time became a prison for high-ranking or political prisoners. Inside the fortress there is the cathedral where the remains of Tsars such as Catherine the Great or Peter the Great rest. You could take monumental photos from the site.
